Marathon A Huge Success!

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2010-06-16

The 31st Swaledale Marathon took place on Saturday 12th June and gave me my 3rd opportunity to start the event and wish all 471 starters on their way. Yet again the weather was kind and viewed very favourably by all participants with 463 completing the course.
My experience of the day took me from registration and then to help out at the Low Faggergill check point where Jess Dale oversaw a slick operation and Bobbie fuelled us with her delicious home made fudge – we did manage to spare the odd piece to competitors, but only if they looked really tired! Without fail, every participant had a friendly word or smile to share.  We then headed back to Reeth just in time to see the winners arrive. Unfortunately I then had to dash off due to a prior commitment and missed out on the Smash making – a favourite activity for many of the kitchen team at the finish. I heard from Paul and Geoff though that the day went very smoothly and many thanks have been received from participants both on the day and by email.

Yet again one of the club’s main events was full of good humoured camaraderie - among the entrants and the fantastic team of helpers - and it was a privilege to be involved. As ever, there are too many people to mention individually but thanks go to all of you who helped before, during and after the event – the teamwork is great and nothing too much trouble for anyone. Thank you to Andy Broadley who helps out with all the marathon entries and Judith Hallett who puts together the teams for the day and recruits the helpers. And of course a massive thank you to Alison and Paul Brooks who come back year after year to head up the operation and even find time to take part – well done! Finally on behalf of Alison and Paul, can I pass on thanks to all of the experienced and reliable volunteers that make Swaledale Marathon such a fabulous occasion and guarantees a sellout every year.

Make sure you keep the date free for next year – even if you don’t take part, it’s a great event to get involved in. The 2011 Marathon will take place on Saturday June 11th. If you have any feedback on the day please contact me or Alison on
