Barnard Castle, Deepdale, Cotherstone 17th Jan 2016

The weather forecast was excellent, and a preceding night temperature of minus 4 deg C, gave promise of firm going underfoot.

I was delighted to have eighteen people turn out to accompany me on my walk, John & Maura, Bob & Linda, the Harker twins, Graham M, Mike Palmer, Keith Purdom, Judy Webb, Peter Hay, Mark T, the new lady Jan, Joe Ross, a guest walker, Richard & Gwyneth, Peter and I, making 19 in total.

Wensleydale 4 Day Medley – 18 to 21 February 2016

A total of 29 walkers joined me for the first multi-day non-residential event of the year. The majority for a single day, 3 walkers completing 3 walks and Ann Luxmoore having the distinction of completing all 4 and almost 40 miles of walking in what were at times challenging weather conditions. Well done Ann.

Blencathra by Hall’s Fell Ridge – 14 February 2016

It is always a reliable indication that you are in for a good and interesting winter walk when an assortment of micro spikes, crampons and ice axes start coming out of the boots of cars to be  packed into and onto rucksacks. We were not to be disappointed as Ian assessed who had turned out for the day and decided that he would adopt the ‘hard’ walk option and take us up Blencathra by Hall’s Fell Ridge.

Grinton Youth Hostel AGM Weekend Walks - 6 & 7 February 2016

Despite unpromising weather forecasts, very wet on the Saturday and very cold and windy on the Sunday, both James and myself had a good number of members and guests participate in our respective walks which both started from Grinton Youth Hostel – the venue for this year’s SOC AGM.

Kepwick and the Hambleton Drove Road 28th January 2016

Designed as a shorter 6 mile walk for wintery weather, it was little surprise to find that once again the forecast was for a relatively mild day with rain later! Once again no snow or frosty ground in site – but it was not as muddy as expected.

As it happens the length was about right as it started to rain as we were getting back to the cars.
