It's never too soon to think about getting out and taking photos, both to illustrate your trip reports, and to join in the ever-popular annual photo contest. This year's categories have been decided - "Club Activity", "The Great British Outdoors" and "SOC abroad" for still photos. The video section has been changed only slightly - to allow for somewhat longer videos (I know I found three minutes a bit tight last year).
The Charity Challenge on 26th May 2012 raised £4,007 (plus gift aid) for Breast Cancer Research. Sixteen people cycled from Arnside to Whitby in a day, others converged upon Whitby having cycled from Richmond, Northallerton and Stokesley, or walked 20 miles, or in one case swam there.
Thanks to everyone who took part in the event and to all those generous sponsors.
Swaledale Outdoor Club joins The Walking Partnership
Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-06-29
The Swaledale Outdoor Club has recently joined The Walking Partnership. This new partnership, supported by Ramblers Worldwide Holidays, provides direct financial contributions to local walking groups to help with organising group walks, encouraging people to get out walking, helping to clear and improve footpaths, providing equipment to help walkers etc. Over the past 65 years, Ramblers Worldwide Holidays has given many millions of pounds to assist walking charities and conservation projects in Britain and the countries they visit on their worldwide holidays.
A new bus service on Sundays and Bank Holidays has started running from Richmond up Swaledale to Ingleton via Hawes (timetable). A great way to do linear walks without involving complicated car drops (enviromentally friendly as well).
Paul Brooks has taken over as Chairman after the February AGM and all other posts remain the same as last year. Many thanks to Judith Turner for her years of service as Chairman. Login for the full story.
After a closely fought battle the results of the 2011 photo competition were announced at the Awards Ceremony at the club house on Friday 19th November.
Congratulations to all the runners, mountain bikers and cyclists who took part in the club's Pennine Way Relay over the 22/23/24th September. All of the northern section of the route south to Keld plus the section from Malham to Keld were completed and four cyclists finished the event by carrying the batons from Keld back to the clubhouse. Many thanks to Richard Tait for organising the event so well and to everybody who helped at the end with food, drink and a welcome back at the clubhouse.
The 34th Swaledale Marathon was on Saturday 8th June 2013. 444 participants completed the route. Conditions were bright and sunny, but with a clarity of air that really showed off the magnificent views of Arkengarthdale and Swaledale. Congratulations to all finishers, especially to Ray Stevenson on his 34th marathon. The prize winners were as follows.
All entry places have now been allocated and we're in the process of notifying successful entrants (either by post or email). Places went extremely quickly again this year and several applications missed the cut (xx January). All those who were unsuccessful will also be notified (not a job we enjoy, but we have to limit entry numbers owing to the capacity of the halls, etc.). Cheques will be returned shortly.
