Steve Charlton’s 30 mile ride from Richmond Wednesday 17th August
Posted by Steve Charlton on 2016-08-17
10 riders joined Carol and Steve at the Station in Richmond for coffee prior to the ride to Leyburn. Carol could not join us as she was still recovering from tendonitis.
We set off on the cycle path to Catterick Garrison and then onwards through Scotton and we all enjoyed the long descent to the Patrick Brompton crossroads. The weather was warm with no wind, ideal conditions for a late summer ride. We carried on to Newton le Willows and along the country lanes to Harmby. Lunch was taken at Penleys in Leyburn.
A ride up to Preston under Scar - 7th August - led by Pauline

Once again the sun shone on the righteous as Peter, Mike, Liz, Jenny, John H, Judith, John D, Pete, Ken, Mark, Bernie, Glenys, Paul, Barbara, Yvonne & I set off from Bedale heading West towards East Witton. Spookily Barbara had a puncture in exactly the same place she’d had her last puncture over a year ago. Two knights in lycra (Paul & John H) stayed behind to assist while the rest of us sauntered on. As to be expected by some the 3 fastest cyclists on the ride, they soon caught us up.
Mick, John S, Peter & Pauline, Jenny, Yvonne, Mark, Pete Bradley and I left Bishop Auckland and headed towards Hamsterly. After 12 miles, we voted for a coffee stop at Peggotty's; “a traditional, family run bakery in the heart of Wolsingham”.
Showers were forecast, but we generally found that by the time you decided to stop and put your showerproof on, the rain had stopped and the sun was out. With the hilly route Mick had planned for us (his regular weekly training ride), it was necessary to disrobe sharpish to avoid overheating!
A lovely ride from Hutton Rudby (HR) - actually started an hour earlier at Brompton for eight of us (John & Judith, Jenny, Yvonne, Mike & Liz and Pauline & myself) and when we pulled into HR an hour later 2 members (Mark & Colin) and a very welcome non-member (Pete) joined us for the undulating ride to Kildale. Conditions were perfect with no rain and it turned out to be a warm day.
Steve & Carol’s Ride from Scorton, Wednesday 15th June, 2016

As arranged, we met at Scorton Village Hall Café for coffee etc. (the obligatory bacon sandwich for Steve !) and were joined by Liz & Lesley for coffee.
A surprising number turned up despite suffering on this ride in previous years. The climb up to Gayles warmed us on this misty morning and we met up with James and Barbara.
80 miles with 4 Castles from Masham – on Monday 9th May

A pop-up ride on another surprisingly warm and sunny day, was put on offer by me to recce the Yorkshire Pedalthon organised ride taking place on Friday 20th May from Theakston’s Brewery in Masham.
John Hallett, John Waldron, Willie, Steve R, Martin (from Ripon CC) and I enjoyed a long hilly ride up Wensleydale on the quieter roads passing by Middleham Castle (and some very frisky racehorses) and Bolton Castle before calling at Askrigg for elevenses.
Jill, Andy, Graham, Melanie, Barbara and I set off from Kettlewell on a sunny but very cold day. Part way up Fleet Moss I was overtaken by Steve who had been delayed by having to go back for his cycling shoes. Melanie left us at the top of Fleet Moss, as planned, to return the way we had come.
The descent from Fleet Moss to Hawes was frighteningly fast with Graham's bike having a bout of tremors. Steve advised clamping the bike with your knees to stop the resonance. It took 2 hours to get from Kettlewell to Hawes - longer than I had planned - it was going to be a long day.
I was amazed to see Jenny out on her bike so quickly after her accident in Majorca. She had no problem in keeping up with the group - Berni, Yvonne, Mark amd me.
Our route took us out via West Tanfield and Ripon to Studley Royal where we stopped for morning coffee. We sat outside by the lake on a beutiful sunny day.
