Brompton: Sion Hill Hall

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2009-08-19

This was Lucia’s first ride and proved very eventful. Carol, Steve, Lyn, Janet, Vic, Ken, Liz, Anne, Lucia, Barbara and I rode at a gentle pace from Brompton via Danby Wiske, Yafforth and Maunby to Sion Hill Hall where we had to ensure that Lucia was not carried away by the eagle owl.

Anne was concerned that with the trailer she might not be able to keep up with us. She need have no fears – our concern is that when she doesn’t have Lucia with her she will be unstoppable – we will have to load the trailer with our luggage to slow her down.

London: London Edinburgh London 1400KM Audax

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2009-07-25

I’m pleased to report that on Thursday 29 July at around 7:30PM I completed for the second time the UK’s longest audax, the 1400KM LEL, some 106 hours since setting out from Lee Valley YH in Hertfordshire the previous Sunday. With that I had finished 2 hours ahead of my 2005 time, and had around 9 hours to spare before the cut off time.
For those interested here is a brief summary of how we tackled it:-
Sunday 25 July, Lee Valley to Northallerton 445KM

Richmond: Steve & Carol's Twenty Hillyish Miles

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2009-07-22

Fourteen members met at the clubhouse for this Wednesday ride, an excellent turn out for these increasingly popular midweek rides. Amongst the faithful were Maura and Barbara who were also on the very first SOC ride back in the dark ages of circa 1974.

Brompton: Training for the E2E

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2009-07-18

An early start from home saw us at Brompton on time.  Just as we were about to leave Keith arrived and joined us for the convoluted route to Bedale via an aborted attempt to get along the Aiskew lane at the A1 road works.  The traffic was very heavy all the way since the main Northallerton-Leeming road was flooded.  A coffee stop was required to recover, to which no objections were raised even though the Richmond set had just had one.  The route to Ripon was sunny all the way through Masham, Grewelthorpe, etc and still warm when we got to the Spa Gardens for lunch, where James joined us hav

Troutbeck: Lakeland Passes

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2009-07-11

At the Troutbeck summer camp Dave and Roly decided to have a third attempt at the Lakeland Passes route, this time the decision was taken to attempt the route in reverse. The weekend did not begin well for Dave, having dropped off Anne and Lucia at the site on Friday evening he had forgotten the keys for his newly acquired roof rack, so instead of a relaxing evening in the pub was forced to make a 150 mile round trip back to Northallerton!

Staindrop: Upper Teesdale and Weardale

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2009-06-27

The ride from Staindrop attracted two old timers, one fighting fit after completing the end to end on three pints a day, the other short of breath after riding from Northallerton. This was to be Melanie's ride but despite her supplying the intended route the old timers decide to hijack the route. Staindrop to Middleton in Teesdale is a long drag and so it was coffee at the bakery, followed by another steady climb from Teesdale to Westgate in Weardale.
