January Rides

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-02-09

The warm, dry weather in January allowed a full programme of cycle rides and there were excellent turn outs on all the rides. The lack of any need for salting the roads meant that bikes were seen that are normally mothballed at this time of year. February in contrast has started with a cancelled ride due to the freezing snow which fell on the night of the Dinner and Dance.

Major Cycling Events in the Area for 2012

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-02-07

It has been announced that the Elite Men's and Women's National Road Race Championships for 2012 will be held on Sunday 24 June 2012 at Ryedale North Yorkshire.  Bradley Wiggins won the mens  title last year in Northumberland and Lizzie Armistead won the women's title.

It is a great weekend and I am sure a few of us will be going over there for the weekend to support the event.  More details will follow.

Ripon - Pateley Bridge - 20th November 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-12-03

16 of us cycled from Ripon to Pateley Bridge. We took a quiet road out of Ripon around the outskirts of Fountains Abbey. The road deteriorated into broken up tarmac and then into a dirt track.

Mankinholes Weekend 12th & 13th November 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-12-03

The Club autumn weekend was held this year in Mankinholes near Hebden Bridge - an area which is not often visited by the Cycling section.

On Saturday Melanie, Martin, Anth, Peter and I rode, and occasionally pushed our bikes across plank bridges, along the canal to Hebden Bridge.

Windermere 22nd October - The Gravenor Classic

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-12-03

Martin organised a weekend in the Lake District and led a ride on the Saturday which he named The Gravenor Classic - so I felt I had no alternative but to join him on a ride in my name.

Barbara and I went across on the Friday and did a very pleasant ride from Langwathby to Hutton in the Forest to visit the veggie cafe/puppet theatre. The Puppet Theatre is only open in school holidays but the cafe and art gallery were very good.

Anth's White Horse Ride Sunday 6 November 2011

This was to be my first lead of an SOC road ride, and I ended up appreciating the leaders of all the other rides I’ve been on. There’s more too it than meets the eye!

Brian's Autumn MiniReverse Leg Stretcher

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-11-09

A mild day saw 10 members (including a welcome return for Catherine) meet at Hutton Rudby for a reduced version of Brian's Leg Crunch.  Since this latter route had involved four big climbs (Gribdale, Clay Bank, Carlton (easy side) and Scarth Nick we thought we were in for a hard time, particularly as "reverse" in the title implied the steep way up Carlton Bank.  However, we had missed the other word changes to include "mini" and from "Crunch" to "Stretcher".  So the ride was a lot easier than an

Paris-Brest Paris Again! - A Dave Atkinson Epic

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-10-24

Having completed the infamous PBP twice previously I set myself a challenge this year to complete the 1229 KM course in under 80 hours, and as it turned out I finished in 74 hours 27 minutes - 8 hours ahead of my 2007 time and 14 up on 2003.

Swensleydale Switchback 1st October 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-10-10

Melanie, Steve R, Richard, Barbara and I left Richmond at 9.00 in the morning to tackle the Swensleydale Switchback - a 64 mile ride with 7,782 foot of climbing - crossing the watersheds between Swaledale and Wensleydale six times.
