Ann and Liz's Rides - 28th and 31st March

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-04-08
Ann's Ride From Fountains Abbey to the High Moors - Wednesday 28th March.
This was the second of my ultra short, ultra slow (for me) rides.
Six of us, James, Barbara, Graham (escaped from MB section), Sheila and prospective new member, Rosie, set off in the mini heatwave.
We headed south past a ruined church on a hill, and a sign on a side lane marked 'Feb - April', neither of which could I explain satisfactorily to James.

Oxnop Scar 24th March 2012

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-04-05

On a beautiful summer's day in March there were 18 ascents of Oxnop Scar and only 16 riders - the reason for this anomaly is that Mick having got most of the way up stopped for a breather and foolishly asked Tony if stopping invalidated his ascent. This is important to Mick as Oxnop Scar is number 46 in the "100 Greatest Cycling Climbs". Unfortunately Tony declared that he wouldn't count it if he stopped so Mick (with Tony acting as his personal coach) went down again and back up - this time successfully despite starting off in the wrong gear. Masochism or what?

Liz's Really Really Wet Ride Sunday 4 March 2012

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-03-05
John  H had a ride booked in the program, but found an excuse to watch rugby in Bath.  Anth initially offered to cover the ride, but he was otherwise tied up. So that left Liz with the task of leading a short ride from Northallerton around the back lanes to the appropriately named Water Garden Café near North Cowton.

Brian's Hilly Ride from Hutton Rudby Sat 3 March 2012

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-03-05

Nine of us, including Smithy (who, as usual, didn't complete the ride), assembled at Hutton Rudby village green - Brian, Mick, Roly, Catherine, Richard, Val, Tony and moi. A variety of possible routes were discussed - closure of the road to Ralph's Cross forced Brian to re-think. As Steve had cycled from Osmotherley and had just come over Scarth Nick, Brian decided to give that a miss and go straight to Carlton Bank. So we set off in slight drizzle to attempt an ascent of the dreaded 1 in 4.

Seathwaite Weekend (Feb 24 -26) Cycling

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-03-03

Paul and Martin cycled from Northallerton to Seathwaite on the Friday whilst Melanie and I cycled from Kirkby Stephen. The wind was deceptively strong or at least I felt it was but that may have been just me struggling to overcome the after efffects of a bad cold.
