Steve's Ride to Staithes Saturday 5 October 2013

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2013-10-14

Steve set off from Osmotherley at 9.00 am on his ownsome there being no takers to cycle from Osmotherley to Stokesley.

In the meantime Liz, Ken and Lyn headed to Kildale in the car.  Lyn in plenty of trepidation as to what was to come.

Steve met Barbara, Roland, John and Martin at Stokesley and, after a very quick coffee set off to meet the rest of us at Kildale.  In the meantime Paul turned up at Kildale having cycled in from Northallerton.

At it's peak on the day,  an amazing 12 cyclists came out.  Eight cyclists decided to take James' lead and complete the whole route of the relay event from the clubhouse at Richmond starting at 6.30 am (!!) and covering 80 miles.

Oxnop Scar 13th October 2013

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2013-10-13

Only 3 of us braved the weather and the hills - Mike and I started at Richmond and Martin joined us just before Fremington.. As it turned out (as is often the case) the weather wasn't too bad - overcast, drizzly in the afternoon, winds not too strong; and the hills were only hills.

Tour de Northern Dales - 25th September 2013

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2013-10-12

As part of the Richmond Walking and Book Festival I led a ride following the Tour route over Grinton Moor and Buttertubs. Although, we had no paying guests, a number of SOC cyclists participated in what was a very enjoyable ride. We started off by climbing past Grinton Youth Hostel, a part of the Tour route which isn't even classified as a climb. Nobody told our legs that.

The Stang 21st August 2013

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2013-08-29

Jill, Jenny, Caroline, Tina, Bernadine, Barbara and I set off at about 10.10 am from Richmond to climb up the Marske Road and then across the Feldom Ranges where we met Yvonne just before Kirby Hill.

I picked up a call on my answer machine - the message was from Liz but contained no information just a monologue of cursing about which buttons to press. Liz had obviously not realised that she had indeed got through to my answer machine. I tried ringing back but to no avail.

Ken's Ride Smithy Led Saturday 10 August 2013

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2013-08-20

Well, Ken wasn't there, being ill and all that, so Smithy had agreed to lead the ride.  It was a dry but cloudy day and Paul lead Val, Tony, James, Liz, Roly, Bernadine, Mick and Jenny up the hills from Brompton to Osmotherley.  Steve joined them there and Lyn, declining to ride the hills,  took a picture or two.  A few bold riders had crossed the water splash but the sensible ones (i.e those with more sense or that had previously fallen painfully in it) crossed the footbridge.

Martin's Birthday Ride Saturday 20 July 2013

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2013-08-10

We are indebted to John for planning this lovely ride.  It was to be John's Castles ride but given  he was languishing in Belgium at the time Martin was persuaded to lead the ride (ably assisted by Paul and Steve with his Garmin and James).  As it happened to be Martin's birthday that day the ride became Martin's Birthday Ride, sorry John!!  The route incorporated Hornby Castle, Castle Bolton, Middleham, Swinton Castles, and Clifton and Snape Castles.
