Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2014-02-24

See James' Report On Black Wednesday about this ride

On the 15 January 13 of us set off from Richmond with the intention of lunching at Cross Lanes Organic Farm tea rooms. Lyn had balloons on her bike (one of which is still floating around Richmond) and a birthday cake in her saddle bag (!) as it was her birthday the following day.

Wensleydale Wander 19th January 2014

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2014-01-19

The weather forecast was bleak but nevertheless 7 of us set out from Leyburn. The biggest surprise was Bernadine arriving 15 minutes before the start time. Is this a New Year resolution? Keep it up!<--break->

Black Wednesday

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2014-01-19

My ride on 15th January started off inauspiciously and got worse. I'd just counted up to 13 of us at the start at Richmond and at that point Tim fell off his bike - uninjured he got back up and we were on our way. We met up with Yvonne near Kirby Hill and for a brief while we were 14 but then Tim's tyre bulged alarmingly and he and Bernadine decided to call it a day and make their own way back to Richmond.

Yvonne's Ride From Ravensworth Wed 27 November

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2013-12-23

With high pressure sitting over us for a few days it meant that the roads were as dry as is possible at this time of year. 9 met at Ravensworth with Barbara and James having cycled from home. The steep bank up to Gayles quickly overheated us as the temperature was already 11 degrees and we made fast progress to the A66 crossing at Smallways. Between there and Whorlton we came across a hedge trimmer so we picked up our bikes and carried them past all the debris but by the time we had finished our coffee stop Peter had found a slow puncture in his front tyre.

December rides

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2013-12-20

The month began with the Christmas lunch rides. We split into 2 groups from Scorton with a shorter slower ride taking in Paddock Gardens for morning coffee and a faster ride doing an extra loop around Eryholme. The faster group proposed to also stop for coffee but we weren't quick enough and I was in fear of Liz's strict instructions to be back by 1pm. The two groups met up at Moulton. We had a great lunch - thanks to Liz for her excellent organisation.

Hamsterley Forest 30th November 2013

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2013-12-20

The end of November but a fine day to be doing a hilly ride to Hamsterley Forest, which on a winter's Saturday was very peaceful. Our route took us from Piercebridge via Winston, Staindrop and Woodland to the cafe in the forest. We returned via Morley, Evenwood and Hilton.

Nidderdale Greenway 20th November 2013

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2013-12-20

A good turnout for a ride from Fountains Abbey on a day when the weather forecast was poor. However, as is often the case, the weather was much better than anticipated. We rode via Markington to Ripley and then along the recently opened Nidderdale Greenway following the old railway line across the Nidd.

Hathersage Weekend

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2013-12-20

A great weekend of cycling. On Saturday we cycled from the hostel to Chatsworth House and then along the Monsal Trail to Miller's Dale. All the tunnels have now been opened to walkers and cyclists. The floors have been tarmaced and the tunnels lit - what a great project! We returned via Tideswell and Eyam, only getting caught in the rain towrds the end.

National Hill Climbing Championship - The Stang

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2013-12-20

Six of us braved the stormy weather to cycle from Richmond to the Stang, by way of Cross Lanes Cafe,to see the National Hill Climbing Championship. We were joined by Dave from Scunthorpe who had cycled 60 miles to Richmond before he met us and was cycling back afterwards (phew!).

We struggled up the hill into a gale force wind to see the competitors being blown up the other side. We also struggled down the hill passing Tony and Valerie who had driven to the event.
