Robin Proctors Scar - 28 April 2012

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-05-20

Sunday 29th April was the date for my planned SOC meet to the classical gritstone of Laddow in the Peak District but by Friday 27th the now familiar weather map of a deep low-pressure zone sweeping across the country suggested a backup plan was in order. It had been April showers most of the week, however Saturday was forecast to be fair although on the chilly side (8 degC) for April and with a strong 20mph northeasterly breeze.

Armathwaite - 15 April 2012

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-04-23
It was too cold for Dow Crag so Phil suggested Armathwaite in the Eden Valley. Five of us met at Scotch Corner. Andy P, Bruce, Phil, Andy F and me.
It was a good journey north with excellent views of Blencathra and the Helvellyn range once we left the A6 at Penrith. Andy P and Phil had been to Armathwaite before. Consequently Andy knew of the detour by the river to see the funny faces in the rock. See photo for more funny faces.

Ben Ice is Nice but Basking Seals are Better - N Wales Mar 2012

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-04-10

So it was that time of the year again to dust off the ice aces and think about travelling to Scotland to sample the delights of winter climbing in the UK. Dave had made his usual booking for the CIC hut under the north face of Ben Nevis, allowing quick access to the best ice climbing in the UK and the plan was set. Unfortunately with temperatures forecast to be around +10°C the weather wasn’t quite lining up for us so the trip moved to the Chamois Mountaineering Hut in north Wales!

Trowbarrow - 18 Mar 2012

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-04-10
Andy F and I had only been parked at Trowbarrow for 10 minutes when Phil pulled up with Ruairidh, Harry and Andy P. Three climbers had been to Trowbarrow before and 3 hadn't. Clear blue skies and sunshine meant it was the third Sunday on the trot for fab weather. (I hope this isn't our summer me thinks). It was 10.00am and we were the first climbers of the day to arrive. Later we would be the last climbers of the day to leave.

Stanage - 11 Mar 2012

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-03-26
We were 3 climbers who met at Scotch Corner, Ray, Andy F and me. Sandra and Harry joined us from the A61.
We arrived at Stanage around 11.30am. Clear skies and no wind promised a perfect day for climbing. Rare for only the second week of March. I'm not sure who did what in which order but I did make note of the following. Sandra said no photos of her - I took them anyway!

Wharncliffe - 26 Feb 2012

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-03-26
Two climbers turned up at Scotch Corner services at 9.30am Ray and myself. We subsequently drove down the A1 to Sinderby to collect Callum and how nice Sinderby looked in the sunshine with all the snowdrops out.
We arrived at Wharncliffe, six miles from Sheffield, around 11.30am. I've got to say it was a quality call of Ray's to go there the crag was sheltered and warm all day. We couldn't ask for better weather for the end of February.

Scotland - 18 / 19 Feb 2012

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-03-19

Saturday 18 Feb 2012

Our first (and only!) Scottish winter meet was based in Fort William at the Bank Street Lodge Hostel. After fish and chips on route we rendezvous'd at the Grog n Gruel for a pint to discuss tactics!

The weather forecast was predicting very strong winds and snow, so a lie in was called for on Saturday morning. After a late breakfast we headed out for a general look see and our view was to wander up to Stob Coire nam Beith in Glen Coe.

Stanage "Popular End" - 2 Oct 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-10-15

Paul’s trip to Dow Crag in the lakes was relocated to Stanage in order to avoid the rain which was heading South during the day. Sandra, Carol, Callum, Harry, Phil, Paul and I headed off down the A1 circa 8.15hrs. The persistent rain eventually subsided and was replaced with hazy sunshine.

Phil and Carol

Phil and Carol on Crack and Corner HVD 4b

Phil and Carol climbed the following routes:

Wilton Quarry, Bolton, 4 Sept 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-10-09
4th September saw Andy, Sandra, Phil, Rory and me heading for Wilton Quarries near Bolton. Arriving at the BMC
owned car park things were looking promising - until we opened the car door and heard the gunfire.
This meant that the two more amenable quarries were out of bounds as the shooting club has priority on Sundays.
This left us with Wilton 4 Quarry and, oh horrors, it was very damp, green and uninviting.

Holly at Stanage, 14th August 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-08-21

The forecast was for another almost dry Sunday, and so four of us met at Northallerton and headed off down to Stanage for my scheduled meet in the Peak District. The others were Andy, Pete and Steve (new applicant). After a late breakfast at the ‘Outside’ café in Hathersage, we drove on to the plantation car park below Stanage Edge and walked up to Goliath’s Groove.
