Despite the grim forecast - thick fog with rain expected later - six determined riders gathered at Nuns Close car park (with one amazing rider cycling over from Leyburn!), ready to take on a challenging 38‑mile route. We set off towards Washton, climbing over the Feldon Ranges before rolling on to Gilling West. The plan to meet the three 'Barton Buddies' near Scurragh Lane worked perfectly, and with our group now nine strong, we continued through Catterick Village and Tunstall, looping around the back of the Garrison to Richmond. The figure‑of‑eight route offering plenty of opportunity to bail out if needed, though spirits remained high.
Lunch at MyTi was a slightly hurried stop, as Terras needed to close the café earlier than expected for a lifeguarding exam – I’m delighted to let you all know that he passed!
After lunch, we made our way to the Falls for the obligatory group photo. At this point, one rider decided that an afternoon of watching rugby sounded more appealing than riding on in the rain, we couldn’t entirely blame him!
As we approached Hudswell, Astrid suggested a stop at the Downholme pub for a warm fire and a much‑needed coffee (with crisps!). The group agreed instantly; it proved to be a very wise choice.
On our return to Richmond, two riders opted for the valley route back while the remaining five tackled Clapgate Bank. Unfortunately, a hedge cutter had been through ahead of us, and two riders picked up punctures. The resulting walk up the hill was a bit of a slog.
With the weather worsening, the three 'Barton Buddies' pressed on - they still had more miles to cover - while the final two riders accepted a lift back to Richmond rather than attempt to repair their punctures in the rain. A sensible choice by that point in the day.
Thanks to everyone for a memorable day out.
