Hurworth to Raby Castle

Hurworth to Raby Castle

Initially cool, but otherwise perfect cycling conditions yesterday for our ride from Hurworth to Raby Castle. Despite the unforseen closure (short staffing) of The Mustard Tree cafe, there was a good turnout, 13 in all by the time we had 'scooped' everyone up on route. We split into quicker and slower groups, but as so often happens, the latter overtook the former after Roly punctured at Langton!

And so it was the quicker Slower group reached Raby Castle quicker than the slower Quicker group. Hope that's clear!

Cafe staff were friendly and seating plentiful. Disappointingly, the overpriced scones lacked fluffiness and fruit content, judged by Yvonne, our resident 'sconnoisseur'. Also, the cafe was not keen to accept cash payments, much to the consternation of Roly who made clear he was not happy with this 21st century contactless payment nonsense!

In other respects, the cafe and views over the castle and grounds were pleasant and, after a restful hour, we were back on the road. Our journey back was highlighted by encountering the hunt at Aldbrough. Hounds chasing a scent veered off course and made a beeline for the busy Piercebridge road. Could it be the odour of a dozen sweaty cyclists confused their olfactory organs?

Either way, there was the improbable situation of fast approaching shouts and the clatter of hooves from behind, followed by several anxious horseriders overtaking us on the road at full gallop. I was doing 20mph, so they were shifting! Fortunately they were just in time to stop traffic and guide the happily oblivious hounds safely across the road. 🐕 🐕 🐕

The remainder of the ride for the Quicker group was uneventful and completed in warm sunshine. Sources tell me the Slower group missed a turn, adding a couple of extra miles to their ride back. That'll teach them to overtake us fast ones on the way out!

So, a thoroughly pleasant Spring-like day spent out on our bikes. Thanks to all for the company.
