Blustery ride to Cross Lanes

Blustery ride to Cross Lanes

A group of 6 set off from Ravensworth with no concerns about the threat of strong winds. It’s easy when it is on your back which it was as far as the turn up to the A66 after we had met up with Glenys. Soon after crossing the main road we unexpectedly bumped into Graham.

The steady descent to Eppleby was very enjoyable, so much so that I was in a state of bliss and almost forgot about the four lads enjoying a refreshment break in the café there.

A quick about turn and we were now a group of 12 which split into two.

It was soon after passing through Piercebridge that the wind was now in our faces and seemed to get worse every time we had an uphill to negotiate.

Progress was slow and made the long part of the ride to lunch even longer although the slower group arrived at Cross Lanes only about 15 mins after the arranged sitting and 20 minutes behind the faster group. We were all really desperate for a good break. The café was unusually quiet but, alas, no scones.

The Ravensworth group thankfully now had only 11 miles to do but still facing the wind on our climbs. At least we had lots of lambs and daffodils to see. The descent to Greta Bridge was a delight.

I felt really sorry for those who still had to get back to Darlington and Catterick.

Thank you to all who came and well done.

Yvonne
