Kepwick and the Hambleton Drove Road 28th January 2016
Designed as a shorter 6 mile walk for wintery weather, it was little surprise to find that once again the forecast was for a relatively mild day with rain later! Once again no snow or frosty ground in site – but it was not as muddy as expected.
As it happens the length was about right as it started to rain as we were getting back to the cars.

Boxing Day 2015

Boxing Day Walk 2015

It was raining when we met in Richmond Market Place, as it had rained almost every day since early November. Only three members today (including leader), the smallest group ever since the annual Boxing Day walk was started over 30 years ago.

Because of high river level with flooded fields and very muddy conditions generally I had changed the route, cutting out some of the very boggy terrain.

Surrender Bridge- Gunnerside  10.12.2015

In the after math of Storm Desmond and flooding in Cumbria, Thursday’s 8 mile walk from Surrender Bridge, via Blades, Gunnerside, Winterings and return by Hard Level Gill proved to be quite pleasant, as depicted in Trevor’s photographs.  There were some puddles, muddy patches and a short downpour with hail, but our group of 10  were well prepared.

As Richard  was unwell that day, I led it- well mostly from the middle and the back! Thanks to all.

Howgill Fells – 6 December 2015

It was possibly not the best day to go to Cumbria, it having been designated a ‘Disaster Area’ after receiving a record amount of rainfall overa 24 hour period. However, the walk was in the programme and 4 hardy SOC members were determined to do it – if we could get there. Which we did after a slightly interesting drive over, through and around the flood debris and small landslips from the day before.

Grasmere/Langdale 29 November 2015

Grasmere / Langdale – 29 November 2015

The weatherman said it would rain then rain harder with strong winds and gusts up to 60-70mph, improving in the afternoon. For once the weatherman was exactly right.

Forewarned that the planned walk on the high fell tops was likely to be slightly inhospitable, potentially spoiling our enjoyment, four hardy souls opted for a slightly lower route but still taking in the delights of Grasmere and the Langdale Valley.
