Whaw Moor and Foregill Gate: Sunday 23 August

Five walkers Sharon, Wendy, Brian and Mark braved a dire weather forecast to meet me at the CB Inn layby for a walk in Arkengarthdale.  After a short walk along the road we crossed a footbridge over Arkle Beck then took the footpath along the beck to re-cross at Whaw Bridge.  From there we ascended a moorland track onto the wilds of Whaw Moor. Fortunately, the rain held off on this exposed section of moorland except for the occasional brief shower.  We even benefitted from some brief spells of watery sunshine, gaining great views across Arkengarthdale as we followed a second track to reach the road leading to Foregill Gate.

We had lunch at Foregill in the shelter of a convenient wall before heading north of Cringley Hill and down to the road near Arkle Town.  As we walked along the road to Langthwaite Bridge the rain really did set in but we hadn't far to go to reach Scar House and a brief climb back to our start point.  On the whole a much less testing day than the Met Office predicted with the bonus of some dramatic views of the Dales landscape.
