Surrender Bridge 1 October 2020
Surrender Bridge and Old Gang Mines
Brian led a walk on the first day of October in fine autumn sunshine. The low sun showed up all the wonderful folds in the landscape. The first half of the walk from Surrender Bridge was on turf paths, including many parts of the Marathon route through Blades and around to the slopes above Gunnerside Gill. After lunch the landscape changed radically to the desolation of the Old Gang mining remains. As we dropped down to the derelict smelting mill we came across workers unloading timber and these giant wotsits. Brian found out what they were for – can anyone else guess?
