Hamsterley Forest and Pikeston Fell
Setting off on a damp and misty morning, just two of us enjoyed an interesting route across unfamiliar (at least to me) territory on Ed Chicken’s Sunday walk in the Hamsterley area. We saw lots of evidence of the once-thriving local lead mining industry and observed a wealth of fungi in Hamsterley Forest (see photo – spiny puffball). Once through the Forest, we traversed an impressive stretch of heather moorland, managed for grouse shooting and ate our socially-distanced lunches in two very well-constructed grouse butts before walking a final stretch of moorland track back to our cars. Thanks to Ed for introducing me to an impressively wild area I’d never walked in before.
