Downholme to Richmond – 19 December 2019
Fifteen walkers turned up in Richmond Market Place to catch the 10.05 bus up the Dale to Downholme – we nearly filled the bus – and James joined us at Hudswell Steps. We all enjoyed the now traditional pre-Christmas walk along the permissive path on the south side of the valley of the Swale, with great views of Swaledale in spite of rather misty damp weather. Recent rain meant conditions were muddy underfoot but most people (and yes it was Geoff again who sat down in the mud for the second year running!) got back to Richmond unscathed and we had a very convivial gathering for coffee and cakes at the Station to finish off the day. The picture shows part of the party at the viewpoint overlooking the castle, and a very full River Swale. There was a good torrent over the falls as we completed our final stretch to the Station. It was good to see Geraint and Kathleen at this point in the day, as regrettably it will be a number of weeks before Geraint’s ankle will be healed sufficiently for him to be back on the fells. Thanks to Ann for leading the walk.
