Middleham mountain biking

Slipstones
It’s been a while since we did this route which was great because we had a load of new people to introduce to it’s hidden secrets. Turning up for the occasion were Jenny, Liz, Mike, Simon, Mark G, Neil S, Ian, Yvette and a very last minute Melanie who suddenly realised that Masham didn’t have any gallops and that we must be in Middleham!
The ride took us out of Middleham past the gallops and across the fields to pick up the road to Coverham and Caldbergh. The start of the ride is pretty heavy going as there is a good bit of grass and winds were so strong we couldn’t stay on the bikes at times. Once on into the heather and even more sadly it was the female contingent with Liz and Melanie going off in the same place and Melanie and Yvette managing to land on rocks that made the rest of the ride a bit uncomfortable for them (sorry!) We stopped at Colsterdale for our the top the off-road section heads onto the moors and the fun starts trying to find the half-track section. Sadly there were a few dives off traditional lunch stop and tried to hide out the wind before the technical ascent under Slipstone crags – some rather excellent riding from Steven going back to make sure he cleared each section. Then it was onto the puddle and bog challenge on Agra Moor – I tell you this ride has it all! We had a split in the group before the final descent to East Witton but Steven and I managed to make it to the gate before Mark and the rest of the renegades joined us. Back along the road to Middleham where we invaded the café and it was jam and cream scones all round – yum!
Thank you for a grand day out
Judith and Steven
