Guisburn; Forest of Bowland

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2010-07-03

Sas and Nev booked a bunkbarn ages ago in the Forest of Bowland for a weekend so we could explore a new mountain biking area. About twenty of us turned up and we had a great weekend with a good ride round the new purpose built trail in Guisburn Forest on Saturday. This had a few fun features including a steep rock drop most of us climbed up to try and a streambed turned into a roller coaster ride called Hully Gully with large swoopy berms and some quite narrow singletrack high above the stream. A good addition to the growing list of accessible trail centres.

We barbequed in the evening and had the first ever SOC Mountain Bike Section Annual Cake Off, won by Kathryn with a very large and attractive strawberry shortcake. Steve and Judith celebrated their first wedding anniversary sleeping on the floor of a dormitory, though their blow up mattress had been nicely decorated by Sas with candles and a banner!

On Sunday we climbed laboriously up to the top of Dunsop Fell just in time for the heavens to open, we had an exciting descent over steep rocky terrain (Steve got lots of bruises) and then got drenched as we hacked back to Slaidburn. We spent the rest of the afternoon warming up in the pub and watching the monsoon rain through the window. Another top weekend away, thanks to Nev and Sas.
