Three Teesside Towns Tour – Weds 21 December
I thought we’d have a change from the usual N Yorkshire scenery with a ride round Yarm, Stockton and Billingham on one of my last summer’s Sky leader rides.
Seven of us set out from the large car park at Preston Park , Eaglescliffe despite cold, wet and windy weather to start. Steve rode in from Ingleby Arncliffe and joined us on Yarm bridge.
We covered almost 35 miles with only a couple of small steep hills and rode along a lot of designated cycling lanes through the urban areas. The stretch along the North bank of the Tees past the White Water Centre was particularly scenic with the bridges and new developments. We stopped off here for a short coffee break to shelter from the rain.
The main stop was at Thorpe Thewles old station café at 21 miles; which is the start of the SUSTRANS Route 1 north along the old railway. From here we took a short hilly stretch (with road graffiti) which was part of last summer’s national road championship route.
Fortunately the day brightened up and we didn’t get too wet and cold, except for Nicola who hopefully got a new waterproof jacket for Christmas.
