Ripon to Knaresborough 10 December 2014

"Where have all the cyclists gone?
Long time passing"
With apologies to Pete Seeger.
The bad weather led to a spate of late cancellations so at 5 minutes to 10.00am Barbara and I stood huddled for shelter in a wet and windswept Ripon thinking that nobody would turn up and we would just ride to Ripley and back. When lo and behold James W appeared from the vicinity of Wetherspoons (where he assured us he had had the veggie breakfast and no alcohol - he had cycled from near York so he was entitled to refreshments).
The three of us set off via Fountains Abbey, Ripley, the Nidderdale Greenway and the Beryl Burton Way to Knaresbourough where we had lunch at the Marigold cafe overlooking the river. As is often the case the weather was nowhere near as poor as forecast or as we first feared. We stayed mainly dry, it wasn't too cold, and our direction of travel north-south meant that the westerly wind wasn't too much of a problem.
James left us at Knaresborough to cycle home to York whilst Barbara and I returned to Ripon via Farnham, Bishop Monkton and Littlethorpe.
It was a very enjoyable ride and the weather was reasonable for the time of year. I'll put a similar ride on again next year for those who missed a good day.
