Ravensworth 25th February 2015
After the snow and sleet of the day before it was nice to see the roads drying and the temperature rising. Nine of us left Ravensworth and headed for Gilling West along the particularly muddy, narrow lane. There were a few howls of protest about the climb up to the A66 but the ride down to Melsonby and Aldbrough compensated. Through to Eppleby and Winston without hitch, but some confused riders when we turned in the opposite direction from Barnard Castle.
The route to Staindrop gave us scenes of lambs and lots of snowdrops. A long, gentle climb in a loop to BC worked up good appetites for our lunch stop where some of us enjoyed the really good apricot and date flapjack. By now we had completed almost two thirds of the ride so it was a very pleasant route back via Whorlton and Hutton Magna before crossing the A66 again at Smallways and passing through Gayles before the last climb and then descent back to Ravensworth.
Just short of 38 miles which is my longest distance this year so far. Barbara and James also cycled from Richmond to Ravensworth and back. Thank you to all who joined me.
