The Dirty Dozen ride 14 December 2016
Having won the prize for the wettest ride of 2016 (it should really have been the worse ride but the section was too kind) I have already been nominated for the dirtiest ride of 2017 even though the year has not yet begun. I was leading Peter Knowles's ride. Peter was not well enough to lead it himself. I would like to pass the responsibility onto Peter for the route but unfortunately it was all of my own design.
The dirty dozen set out from Darlington and cycled via Walworth Gate, Heighington and Bolam to Gainford. We took some very minor and very muddy roads. Low mist obscured what otherwise would have been magnificent views.
Howey's tea room was very accommodating even if the service was a little slow (unsurprising with 12 people descending on them on an otherwise quiet Wednesday). The prices were very reasonable and the food good.
We returned via Piercebridge, Manfield and Cleasby. Everybody seemed to enjoy the ride if not the cleaning of bikes afterwards.
