June started optimistically after an excellent trip to Dow Crag at the end of May. Andy P moved the Wales camping weekend to the Lakes in order to avoid the Welsh Monsoon.(Report to follow)
We had two attempts to climb at Almscliffe. I set off on my bike in sunshine intending to meet Calum who was going straight from work, the rain started about Ripon I optimistically cycled into the rain for several miles expecting to come out the other side into sunshine but to no avail I eventually tuned round and headed back home. The following week attempt two, due to Halwith being out of bounds, me, Calum, Carol, Bruce and new climber Russ started climbing in light drizzle and all followed Calum up Square Chimney and Whiskey Crack MVS, then as the drizzle continued Bruce led us all up V Chimney and Traverse a good effort as the rock was getting slippy and it was one of Bruce`s first leads. By this time Sandra and Harry had arrived at the car park and for the second year running looked at the wet crag and headed for Harrogate wall. There followed three damp or downright wet Sundays when as far as I know no one ventured out. I missed a pleasent evening at Whitestone when the classics of Night watch, Frigg, Odin, Countdown Direct, and Central Crack were ticked off. The last Wednesday saw Goldsboro Carr covered in cloud while while the sun shone on the Vale of York and Teesdale. We had quite a few new menbers and old members returned. As usual we attempted to top rope Fiddler in the Roof 5c and only Russ managed to get around the overhang, well done!
Heres to July sunshine! Phil
