Phil, Bruce and I arrived at Glenridding at 10.30am to tackle Helvellyn. The weather forecast was for hill fog and poor visibility. That sounds about right for Helvellyn I thought. We followed the classic route of Hole in the Wall, Striding Edge and Swirral Edge. Striding Edge had a covering of snow not a vast amount but enough to keep the crowds at bay which is always good.
Arriving at the trig point we passed on lunch due to freezing winds and carried onto Swirral Edge. Red Tarn was completely frozen over and it was here that we heard the shouting. We looked around but saw nothing untoward. However the next day the local news reported a man from Cheshire had fallen 300 ft. Thankfully the 3 of us arrived safely back at the car which was conveniently parked opposite the Rambler's Bar. After a drink we headed home.
