Corvus, Raven Crag Borrowdale, Sunday 26 June 2011

The weather had put the dampeners on my second attempt to hold a weekend camping meet at Buttermere. Paul and I had done an Easter recognisance of Buttermere, climbing Mitre Buttress Direct and Oxford and Cambridge on Grey Crag. The mountain location was superb and the rock was reassuring under foot. We had looked across at the steeper lines of Eagle Crag and decided we would hopefully return at the end of June but the weather had other plans.

So a late decision on Saturday evening to give the lakes a go had us driving up Borrowdale at 10am on Sunday morning. Shepherds looked a bit damp so off to Corvus it was. The approach from the parking spot is just over an hour and the view looking back down into Borrowdale is given below

A bite to eat was next on the list and Janes (Pauls wife) famous homemade sausage rolls featured heavily on the menu.

During the walk-in I mentioned to Paul that I had just bought a 2.5 DMM 4CU cam in the sale at Needlesports and we discussed the merits of various cam designs. Pauls comment on trying my new cam was that he preffered the single stems units of Wild Country etc as opposed to the old twin stem DMM design. What happened next was quite peculiar, as Paul reached straight for the DMM cam as he set off up the first pitch – obviously just the right size I thought!

I think we went slightly off route on the first pitch and missed the first belay and this saw us inch our way up a minging wet crack on the front of the face – felt like HVS to me, glad Paul was leadin

Things started to get much drier after the first mega pitch and a whole lot more enjoyable as well. One thing which did not change was Paul’s sheer determination to use my new DMM cam (which he said he did not like!) on every pitch he led. In fact, his speciality was to use it at belays and hence deprive me the chance of using it! When questioned at the top regarding the frequent use of the DMM cam he calmly replied “do n’t you know that is been scientifically proven that the most placed cam size is 2.5?” then continued to scoff another sausage roll..................
