Armathwaite - 15 April 2012

It was too cold for Dow Crag so Phil suggested Armathwaite in the Eden Valley. Five of us met at Scotch Corner. Andy P, Bruce, Phil, Andy F and me.
It was a good journey north with excellent views of Blencathra and the Helvellyn range once we left the A6 at Penrith. Andy P and Phil had been to Armathwaite before. Consequently Andy knew of the detour by the river to see the funny faces in the rock. See photo for more funny faces.
The following routes were climbed. Andy P lead Glenwillie Grooves (HS 4B) with Phil and Bruce following. Andy F lead Bullgine Run (VD **) I seconded. Bruce later lead Bullgine Run and we all thought it was a disappointing 2 stars.
Later I seconded Andy P on Flasherman (VS 4B ***). I loved this 3 star route.
Phil also lead Flasherman and 39 Steps (VD *). We all climbed Kingfisher (VD *) with the Eden lapping under our feet.
It says on UKC Climbing.com Armathwaite is an idyllic riverside spot. No-one would disagree with that. The sun shone and it stayed dry and sheltered all day. It was a lovely day's climbing finished off with drinks in the Dog and Pheasant. I can't wait to go back.
