Cycling Audax Success!

A very successful Audax cycling event was held on Saturday 21st September starting at the clubhouse in Richmond. 80 cyclists from near (including a number of members) and far took part in four events with distances ranging  from 100km to 200km. Many thanks to Dave Atkinson for organising the event, the members who kindly turned up to provide us with tea and cakes afterwards and the weather gods for giving us a tailwind up Park Rash and down Coverdale!

Great Day For Relay After All

Despite the dire weather forecast more than 30 members turned out for the annual relay on Saturday 7th September along the route of the Yore and Swale Ways - 144 miles of running, walking, canoeing, cycling and mountain biking. The day started at 4am in Wensleydale and teams then ran, biked, canoed etc. both east and west to meet up at the clubhouse in Richmond some 14 hours later. Many thanks to everyone who took part and to all those who helped organise the very successful event.

2013 Swaledale Marathon

The 34th Swaledale Marathon was on Saturday 8th June 2013. 444 participants completed the route. Conditions were bright and sunny, but with a clarity of air that really showed off the magnificent views of Arkengarthdale and Swaledale. Congratulations to all finishers, especially to Ray Stevenson on his 34th marathon.

The Swale Way

The Swale Way is a long distance walk from the mouth of the Swale near Boroughbridge to its source above Keld with an optional extension to Kirkby Stephen. A new website has been set up with descriptions, maps and information about the route: see www.swaleway.org.uk

The Tour de France is coming to Swaledale!

The fantastic news is out! The 2014 Tour de France is coming to Yorkshire. It will start in Leeds on Saturday July 5th 2014 and then head north over Buttertubs Pass and all the way down Swaledale. Full details on the Welcome to Yorkshire website. On Sunday 6th July the route goes from York to Sheffield.  Full details of both days  of the Grand Depart are also on this link.

 

Swaledale Marathon full

The 2013 Swaledale Marathon is now full and no more entries are available.

Once again entries have sold out very quickly this year. Please bear with us as we work through the entry applications. Forms are processed in strict order of receipt through our letter box. Successful entrants will receive their confirmation by post or by email (according to the method of entry).

2012 Photo Competition Winners!

The 2012 Photographic competition was again a success and the overall winner was John Birtill with his photo of Finn seconding his dad on "Fang" on Gouther Crag. Full results here.

New bridge opens at Brompton On Swale

The new footpath and bridleway bridge at Brompton On Swale was opened by Wiliam Hague on Saturday 13th October in a ceremony attended by an excellent turnout of SOC members (see video). A couple of years ago you may remember voting online in a poll to secure funding for Sustrans' Connect 2 project, this has now born fruit with considerable assistance from SOC members Frank Broughton, Barbara Gravenor, Jill Armstrong and others.

Richmond Walking & Book Festival 2012

SOC sponsored the very successful Books and Boots festival this year (21st to 30th September); despite the torrential rain on the Tuesday everybody enjoyed the walks and book related talks.
