39th Swaledale Marathon Saturday 9th June 2018

I had a fabulous day on Saturday 9th June. It began by arriving at Fremington Sunday School at about 7.30a.m. to join others preparing for opening up registration for the 39th Swaledale Marathon. By just after 9a.m. I had finished my jobs on the enquiries and substitutions desk and could rush to the parking field at Grinton to do contact lenses and sun cream, then back to the start field in Fremington, just in time for the start bell to begin the event. The climb up Fremington Edge showed that a bit of the morning mist was still lingering. It was pretty dry underfoot and comfortable for trotting along. The whole route was really enjoyable; great views, good conversations, generous marshals and helpers all enabling the miles to move on by. The ascent up to Great Punchard was a bit warm, but a little breeze after the checkpoint and more in Gunnerside Gill made things more comfortable, along with a sandwich, cake and juice consumed at Level House and another sandwich, more cake and a welcome cup of tea at Gunnerside Village hall. The following stiff climb gave lovely views back along Swaledale and forward towards the end goal. The pleasant weather meant that welcoming crowds awaited at Reeth. I could cool off and wind down sitting on the grass giving others a clap and a cheer, before heading into the hall for replenishing mince and mash, squash and more tea.  After some socialising and organising (and a laugh over the discovery that I was the mystery culprit, who had stolen a tally card, which several plots had failed to track down!), the final finishers arrived and the clearing up could begin. When all was collected up and cleaned, Reeth Hall Caretaker was informed, final checks around the locality were done, it was time for home at 9.30p.m. A grand day out.

See below a selection of emails received, showing that it wasn’t just me who had a fab day.

All of the above would not have been possible without the marvellous team of SOC members who do preparation jobs beforehand and work hard at all the jobs to be done on the day. A massive thank you to you all – without you it wouldn’t happen. I’d like to give a special mention to Judith Hallett, who organises and coordinates the list of helpers on the day, which is not an easy task! Although I am responsible for the overall coordination of the event, Judith’s thoroughness and tenacity is really appreciated.

Next Year is the 40th Swaledale Marathon on Saturday 8th June 2019.

Hi there, Just wanted to pass on massive thanks to the very many people involved in the marathon on Saturday. It was my first time but definitely won't be my last, it is a beautiful route, everyone involved was super friendly and helpful, the pasty was ace, the sun shone and it was just an absolute joy from start to finish (apart from the climb out Gunnerside, that was horrible). Thank you so much for all the hard work, best wishes, Alan.

Many thanks to the whole Swaledale Marathon organising team for another fabulous event on Saturday. It’s my favourite event of the year and I’m always so impressed with how well it is organised. Thank you! Amy

Hi, Thanks to EVERYONE who helps out with this marathon, including leading up to it and organising venues, the lovely mugs, food, marshals on the day whether they are sat in a tent or cooking the lovely meal at the end. It's a fantastic event and very well organised. I know there is a lot of hard work going into this. Everyone was very friendly and encouraging on the day. Much appreciation to all. Diane
