SOC MTB Do Stainburn - Sun 3rd April

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-04-05

Between Harrogate and Otley on Norwood Edge lies the little known gem of Stainburn Forest.  Packed in to a very small area are approximately 8 miles of technical singletrack.  Seven brave souls (Karen, Emz, Phil, Nev, Judith, Alan & Sarah) joined me and JB for a tour of everything Stainburn has to offer.

Hebden Bridge Weekend Away

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-03-26

Canal Hebden BridgeApril turned into rather a hectic month for me what with toothache, a bash on the head, Easter and then The Wedding so it's only now that I've got around to telling you about our weekend in Hebden Bridge at the end of March.

Waskerley Way,

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-01-09

Lets see if we can get all the comings and goings on this ride correct - as you'll see it all got a bit complicated.  Starting from Swalwell we had Phil, Andy J, Russ, Alan & Sarah, James & Barbara, Mel and Pete.  Some set off a bit early and some set of a bit late.  Starting from near Lanchester (a bit later after coffee and biscuits) were Neil, Katheryn, Rach & Sas.  There was snow and ice on the lines and a strong head wind - hard going by all accounts!   At the Consett sculptures Pete turned back.  Shortly after Consett the Lanchester bunch joined the fray.

Tan Hill

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2010-11-14

Rus, Steve, Alan, Sarah, Nev, Phil & I gathered in the car park at Muker.  It had been bright and sunny at home, but the weather had got worse as we headed up Swaledale.  It now looked set to drizzle as we prepared to set off up the punishing climb up Kisdon Hill.  This caused a problem for me as I wanted to wear my new flowery soft shell, rather than my waterproof! After several mind changes over clothing we finally set off - the usual slog up made even worse than usual by a sticky top layer of squidge!  But at least the rain stayed away and we even had a few hints of sunshine.

Elterwater Youth Hostel Weekend

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2010-11-06

I’ve just got time to add a bit about the SOC weekend staying at Elterwater Youth Hostel organised by James and Barbara. Half a dozen mountain bikers turned up and after a busy Friday evening watching fireworks, playing liar dice and drinking too much beer (in some cases) we headed off south towards Hodge Close. The first half of the ride was plagued by mechanicals as Pete’s bike seemed to be stuck on middle ring, Russ ripped the sidewall on his tyre and Matt couldn’t get any low gears.

A Drizzly, Muddy Day

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2010-10-31

Ten of us met up in Aysgarth Falls car park on an inauspicious morning with cloud on the hills, however we soon cheered each other up by having an extended faff with Phil, Rach and Judith’s mudguards whilst we waited for Jason to get ready (I wasn’t sure whether “faff” was a real word so I checked in the dictionary which defines it as “spending time in ineffectual activity”, this covers what the mountain bike section does admirably I think).

What Roman Road?

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2010-10-03

We woke early Sunday morning to the sound of rain pelting on the velux window and Judith’s mobile beeping messages.  First Phil and Rachel, then Pete and Anne and then Alan and Sarah all texting their excuses and apologies.
