Late May in Scotland

Camasunary for lunchNot many takers for a trip to Scotland for the Bank Holiday at the end of May but we had a few so Alan and I decided to head up early and stay in Fort Augustus for a few days and tick off some more mountain bike routes in the area.

Barningham April 13

My advertised ’12 miles easy going’ ride attracted a healthy turnout of 8 comprising Kaye, Mike (testing a 29” Trek), Graham,Ascending Barningham MoorNigel, Neil, Julie, Alan and I. Julie was also on a brand spanking new 29er and was heading off road for the first time.  Alan and I had 5 miles banked already as it seemed a nice enough day to ride to Barningham.

Leighton Reservoir 17th March 2013

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2013-03-21

It seemed like a plan to put this ride in for March as the tracks are normally quite good. The only downside was that Steven was in Singapore so I would have to rely on my built in sat nav to make sure we didn’t get lost (!) The forecast nearer the time did not look so promising but I managed to attract 4 riders to join me and all were warned in advance of (the lack of ) my map reading skills. Luckily Neil professed to know the area so was quickly appointed second in command.

Rach had spotted a number of things prior to this ride being announced:

Reeth and Gunnerside

We led a couple of rides in the middle of February in between skiing trips - luckily the weather was lovely with bright sunshine and drifts of snow under wheel on the higher fells. On Saturday seven (Neil, Sally, Graham, Christopher, Mike, Alan and me) of us met up in Reeth for a ride over towards Apedale Foot and then a slog up onto Heights of Greet for a good run down Alan leading the descent of Greets Hillto Grinton Smelt Mill.

Great Ayton

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2013-02-19

On a frosty Sunday morning 5 of us met for a chilly MTB ride from Great Ayton. This included: Ben, who is new to the club; Diane, who has only ridden with us once before; Judith; Andy; and myself, Karen.  So off we went, up the icey road to Gribdale Car Park. We then headed off to Pinchinthorpe to do part of the red run. The first part was interesting with lots of frozen tyre ruts. The latter two sections were in good condition. The only problem now was we had lost all our height so we were rewarded with another delightful climb.

It was a surprisingly good turnout considering the previous night some members were 'Stripping the Willow'. Mind you, there are not many members whose partner's clean and lube their bikes, attach it to the car, warm the car and have a Sunday roast waiting for them when they get home!! (in Darlington) That's strange Ben said he had a Sunday roast waiting for him after Rachel's last ride?
