Edmundbyers Weekend 10/11 September 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-09-13

The first weekend in September has become a regular date in the diary for an overnight stay in a youth hostel. In 2009 we cycled to Dufton, in 2010 to Boggle Hole, and this year (2011) we decided to cycle northwards to Edmundbyers youth hostel.

The numbers fluctuated throughout the ride out on Saturday and the return on Sunday as people joined us or dropped off but fifteen of us met up in the Punch Bowl Inn on Saturday night.

Hell of the North 4 September 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-09-13

I counted eleven SOC members on this year's 101-mile Hell of the North ride from Darlington-Hawes-Kirby Stephen-Middleton in Teesdale- Darlington. However, there may have been more.

The ride is always a challenge particularly because of the wind. However, this year we had a mild breeze to blow us home. Luckily it wasn't a week later when gale force winds caused the cancellation of the second stage of the Tour of Britain.

Tan Hill From Reeth Wednesday 17 August 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-08-22

11 cyclists gathered at Reeth Village green on a beautiful August morning although annoyingly, there was a tad too much of a westerly breeze for our liking. There were 3 Tan Hill virgins – Steve, Carol and Sheila.

The Stang and Tan Hill - Sunday 3 July 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-08-15

A good turn out on a lovely day saw us setting off from Richmond through Kirby Hill, Newsham, Barningham and so on towards the Stang_&_Tan_Hill_Route.  Unfortunately, they were not serving coffee in Newsham village hall until 11:30 and we were half an hour early.  Never mind, we'll get one somewhere won't we?  The road surface past Barningham became very bad and some repairs are needed to make this safe with bike wrecking potholes appearing in many places.  The tough climb of

High Alpes Trip 16 - 30 July 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-08-15
After climbing 28 mountain passes in the Pyreneese last year, i decided my goal for this year was to climb the French Alpes most famous and highest Col's if possible. I spoke with other club members and was delighted that Lyn, Steve, James and Barbara who are keen cyclists decided to join me.
I am not going to bore you with every specific detail of every climb and hairpin bend, i will just recall the highlights as i saw them.

Upper Swaledale from Reeth 29 June - 'Let them eat cake'

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-07-12

It was a beautiful summer’s day as 10 cyclists met at Reeth for Steve and Carol’s slow but hilly ride (upgraded from undulating last year due to mutterings from the troops).
