Birks Fell - Sat 5th May

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-05-07

After an unexpectedly dry week, this trip was finally on – after many attempts rained off. Paul & I met in Buckden at 9.30 – got changed, walked to the farm, and on up to the entrance – underground by 10.30.

The entrance series was easy enough, until I clambered over a boulder to find no way on – just an impassable 4” high bedding plane crawl. That’s Bradford Crawl Paul said – you may have to excavate a bit.

Lancaster Hole to Wretched Rabbit - Mar 2012

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2012-04-16

Many thanks to Paul, John and Bob E for joining me on this trip; the plan being to follow the route described by John on his website.

On arrival at Bull Pot Farm we were confronted by a fairly large crowd of cavers so we quickly made our way over to Lancaster Hole and were first down the pitch.

Shuttleworth Pot - 19 November 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-12-11

Present were Bob E, Chris, Bob S, Nick and John G who was to be our guide for the trip. We parked on the Leck Fell road near Notts 2 and trekked about 1 mile around the edge of the fell, past Gavel Pot and then followed the wall down towards Ease Gill Kirk on Leck Beck.

County Pot - 13 October 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-11-09

On arrival at Bull Pot Farm a large group of adults and children declared their intention to also go down County; so to avoid getting held up we got changed in double quick time to get ahead of them. The six of us (Nick, Richard, Chris, Bob E, Bob S and Elaine) set off down the pitch and once in Broadway we checked out Mushroom Passage down to Toadstool Junction. From there we followed Razor Passage passing through a couple of break down chambers, route finding was slightly challenging but if you follow the stream you can't go too far wrong.

Lost Johns Cave - 24 September 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-09-28

This was my first visit to Lost Johns and I was quite looking forward to it; I'd wanted to do the trip for many years but never managed it. Fortunately I had Chris, Bob E and John G to show me the way.

Over breakfast John suggested a visit to Shale Cavern and Sink Chamber via Cathedral and Dome pitches would be a good introduction to the system.

Its a Dogs Life - Calf Holes 21 August 2011

I took Barney, Freya, and Freya’s boyfriend Owen for an introductory caving trip – Barney enjoyed the scrambling on Blencathra a few weeks ago (up Halls Fell & down Sharp Edge), and Owen fancied a go at caving, so I assembled my second-best caving kit, and my third-best caving kit, and off we went.

After a brief stop off at Caton to talk to a policeman who was so impressed with my Corolla he wanted to check its MOT and insurance, we proceeded to the finest café in Ingleton for breakfast.

Dolomite Via Ferrata trip 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-08-10

In July a group of eight, based round the caving section, ventured off to the Italian Dolomites for a weeks Via Ferrataing. We based ourselves at the excellent Collets mountain holiday centre in Corvara who organise a range of guided activities ranging from wild flower walks through to Via Ferrata trips. Three in our group had previous Via Ferrata experience, so we mainly did our own thing each day, but for anyone with less experience, or on their own the Collets set up is superb.

Jingling Pot - 9 July 2011

Posted by Swaledale Outdoor Club on 2011-07-12

On the trip over from Richmond water levels at the various check points looked a little on the high side following the heavy rain the previous day; however this was not likely to be a problem providing the water which normally flows down Jingling Cave is not over flowing into the open pot.
