The Club is part of an initiative to promote Orienteering in the Richmond area. SOC has affiliated to BOF to enable members to attend any of their events. The current programme includes several local events from the local clubs like CLOK, NN, Claro, and EBOR programme in addition to SOC events which all SOC memebrs are welcome to attend.

There is a permanent orienteering course at Round Howe Picnic area in Richmond and in 2012 we will be extending this course onto the National trust land on the other side of the river and holding a large grand opening on Sat 16th June. SOC has copies of the maps for the short and long permanent courses and these are available from Richmond Tourist Information Centre.

The Section Organiser of the Orienteering Section is currently adopting a role of “point of contact” for the activity of the Section rather than attempting to actively lead or offer a full or regular programme of events.

This is in response to the current levels of support for this particular activity within SOC.

The Club certainly wishes to maintain a presence within Orienteering and to provide advice and expertise to members who would like to become involved, or to learn more about this activity.

This fits in with the Club’s ethos of involvement in a wide range of outdoor activities which is one of our greatest strengths.

So please be aware that:

-       the published programme for Orienteering is intended as a sample of available events or activities and these may not always be actively “led” by an SOC  member.

-       the Section Organiser will happily advise by email or phone on any aspect of events, equipment, specialist knowledge related to Orienteering but will not necessarily be on hand to accompany or supervise SOC members new to this activity.

-       the Section Organiser retains membership of SOC Committee but will not necessarily be a regular attender at meetings.
