What kind of bike do I need? For road riding the best type of cycle suited to SOC rides is a touring or audax model with full mudguards. though some of our members regularly ride sportive, racing and hybrid models Back to top
What equipment do I need to bring? You are advised to carry as a minimum a spare inner tube, tyre levers and puncture repair kit, and a chain tool but a selection of allen keys and other tools to suit your equipment is advised Back to top
What level of fitness should I have? To take part on the shorter rides you should have covered this distance before and be able to maintain an average speed of around 12 mph, for the longer, faster rides you will need to regularly cover distances of 60-80 miles and be able to maintain an average speed of 13-15mph. Do I need to be an SOC member? Ideally yes, but you may attend 2 rides as a guest before joining.

What type of roads do you use? Mainly quiet lanes, we try to avoid trunk roads as far as possible

What distances do you cover? On most weekends in spring and summer we hold 2 rides, a shorter one of 25-60 miles and a longer one of 60-100 miles. Distance are reduced by around 20% in Winter. Distances and grade of ride are always stated on the programme. Back to top
