Walk from MarskeThe threatening weather did not materialize, the only serious wetting we had was from the hay-pasture in the first 20 minutes. As the weather brightened our compact group of seven and a dog learning the craft of stile crossing and squeezing, travelled an interesting route to a coffee stop just above Marrick Village; 27 walkers counted passing the opposite way, maybe Coast-2-Coasters? After passing by some interesting property conversions in the region of The Old Post Office, we gained the field again to cross the road to embark on what is possibly the very start of Fremington Edge. Here our leader gave the encouraging, "Fifteen minutes to lunch stop", and so, naturally, it was twenty-five minutes later we arrived by the old beacon for lunch; 15 minutes at the Armitage pace, 25 for the mere mortals. The next stage was an interesting mix of rough heather, stony tracks and one very noisy, ill-tempered dog at Owlands Farm, We surrounded our stile apprentice to protect her from him. Then to cross the Stelling Road at Ings Head to meet some of the deepest cow-ruts this side of the Rimatukas. Some SOC Marathon hopefuls had their ankles really tested. An easy terrain ascent to High Greenas and then a lovely easy chat-away-track to a photographer's delight; the view into Marske Beck and over the valley to Clints Scar. A most certain stop for refreshment and a brief and interesting history lesson of the changes in the use of the barns beneath us. The final 40 minutes was spoiled by a short and sharp shower which conveniently saw us beneath some foliage. An 'expert' meteorologist read the clouds, or his palm, and poo-poohed any suggestion of lightning. We did not pause for long and sauntered past the old water wheel - had another very interesting history lesson - and back to the cars. Nice company, lovely route, and enough information from our leader to allow us to compete with The Information Centre at Richmond. Many thanks Yvonne. Ken Ledward |
