Walking in TeesdaleTen of us met at Holwick on a fine and sunny morning. We took the moorland track across from the scars to Grassholme and Selset Reservoirs. I shamefully admit to losing the bridleway and following the track through Rake Gill to pick up the Pennine Way in a different place to that intended. Alls well that ends well however. We got on course again, crossed the shoulder of Harter Fell and had lunch with the panorama of Teesdale before us, Middleton in Teesdale being the prominent feature, an interesting mixture of fine Georgian houses and little dales cottages. Obviously in times gone by some people made money out of lead mining! Following the riverside path (still the Pennine Way) we walked through a profusion of wild flowers on our way to Low Force then back through some cut and some uncut meadows on our way to Holwick and the cars. Bill and Brian extended the walk up to High Force and back via the old drovers road to Holwick. An enjoyable walk amidst beautiful scenery with good company and in perfect weather. John Deighton |
