Runswick Bay

Advertised in the programme as a walk with a bar meal and having arranged with the Fox and Hounds at Goldsborough for 16 meals, I was concerned that if it was a hot day no-one would want to eat. My concerned were unfounded. We awoke to a dull, drizzly morning in Darlington. On climbing Birk Brow in the car we were hit by a sheet of rain. Water was pouring over the road and visibility was almost zero. However, we made it to the Bank Top car park thinking if it was still raining we would go straight to the pub!

It was only slight rain by the time 13 of us gathered, but what about the others? We waited until 10.20, checked the bottom car park, but still no sign of them. We took the Cleveland Way route, along the beach at a newly refurbished Runswick and up on to the cliffs. It had now dried up although it was still dull. Past Kettleness we dropped down through Overdale Woods where the nettles and undergrowth made it hard, wet going. We eventually emerged on the road leading to Goldsborough.

We were made very welcome by Robin and Steph at the Fox and Hounds Goldsborough - tables laid ready and we had a splendid Sunday lunch.

We reluctantly put on our wet boots and returned to Runswick via the old railway line - downhill all the way!

9 miles in good company. What of the missing persons? It transpired that the coast road was flooded at Brotton and Skinningrove and they were turned back by the floods. Amazing weather for July.
