KildaleSix (plus one dog) arrived at Zermatt, alias Kildale, for the first programmed walk of 2002. It followed the Christmas snow and subsequent freeze, and whilst much of the snow had melted, a sheet of ice covered the footpaths and roads alike. Skates or skis may have proved more appropriate! The route followed part of the Cleveland Way, up to Captain Cook's Monument, before branching left and approaching Roseberry Topping ( Cleveland's mini-Matterhorn) from the west side. Lunch was taken under a blue sky, the sun on our faces and with fine views of the two ancient landmarks (Roland and Dave!). The scenery wasn't bad either. Following Len's advice on "always ask for a discount", and Roly's experiences of consumer wisdom, it became increasingly more urgent to commence our bold ascent of the south face of Roseberry Topping. So this we did, whilst Chris went off to warn Fell Rescue. Disappointingly, several under 5's. already at the summit were there to greet us. If anything, there was perhaps a degree of boldness in the descent which, owing to ice on top of stone slabs, was fairly treacherous underfoot; but no casualties to report. We rejoined the Cleveland Way across to Gribdale Gate, where we waited sometime for Dave and Alison who were apparently waiting for us! The last couple of miles were completed at a fairly sprightly pace, as the sun dropped, the temperature lowered and the conversation deteriorated! Finally the Tea Shop at Kildale provided the ideal way to conclude the day, with tea and cakes all round. Thanks to everyone for a great day out and in good company: oh and of course those invaluable consumer tips! Mike |
