High EllingtonNine members met at High Ellington near Masham where a chat with the local taxi proprietor revealed that villagers were none too keen about cars parking in the village (apparently it's OK if you are going to church). So to keep the peace we moved our cars to a lay-by on the main road not far away before starting off towards the hamlet of Low Ellington. From there we took a route across the fields to the river Ure taking time to observe the flora and fauna encountered on the way. At the river we followed the bank-side path upstream following it's sweeping curves to Kilgram Bridge. The birders amongst us spotted a group of tufted ducks swimming on the water. From Kilgram we headed into Jervaulx Park where a clutch of waterhen chicks was spotted swimming on a pond and yet another waterhen sitting on a nest of eggs within a few feet of the track. At the abbey we took a break for lunch among the ruins and took time to explore the site before a short walk up the main road to High Jervaulx Farm the home of Brymor Ice-cream where (yes you've guessed) we had an ice-cream. I think we all chose a different flavour as there are so many. Thus refreshed we tore ourselves away and headed across the fields onto the ridge above the farm where we enjoyed the views across to the Cleveland Hills. Beyond the ridge we joined a narrow lane leading into Ellingstring village. At the edge of the village the group took a second lane leading towards High Ellington. We noted the ancient field layout around the village with many long narrow fields, which adjoin narrow access lanes leading from the village centre. At High Ellington we walked through the village to find yet another lane which lead us back to our starting point. A leisurely and interesting eight miles with lots to see and enjoy along the way.
