Fairfield Horseshoe

Sixteen people met at Ambleside for this well known route. Yet, as is often the case, there were those present who had never walked the Horseshoe, or in the area, before. So on a fine September day we set off, with blue skies and bright sunshine and some low cloud visible on the tops. Amidst various murmurs of appreciation we made our way via Low Sweden Bridge to start our ascent. The murmurs of appreciation soon faded, to be replaced by puffing and blowing as steady progress was made towards the first mini-summit of Low Pike.

It was during this phase that the leader, whilst confidently leading the group across (apparently) shallow bog land, disappeared from view. He was subsequently observed to haul himself clear, face racked with pain and clutching his leg. Whilst I can vouch for the fact that this was a truly agonising experience, the group lost all interest on discovering that this was merely an attack of cramp and not multiple fractures. The resulting limp gained no sympathy.

The mid-section of the walk, including lunch, was completed in cloud and regrettably fine views from the summit of Fairfield were not enjoyed.

Poor visibility was not to last however, since marvellous views of Windermere, Coniston Water and surrounding peaks returned, just ten minutes into our descent. The remainder of the route was completed in the beautifully clear conditions in which we had set out. Witnesses even reported sunbathing occurring whilst looking down over Grasmere and Rydal Water. Back in Ambleside a pub was just the job to finish a fantastic days walking in excellent company.

Hope the first timers were impressed enough to return!
