Christmas Walk

Brian's Hilly Alternative

With so many people turning up for the Christmas lunch walk it was decided to split into two groups, that's where I made my first mistake, I somehow ended up in Brian's group. Before we had even left the car park it began to rain, so we stopped before we had even started to don waterproofs!

We set off across flat but very muddy fields but very quickly came to the first hill, straight up through the woods to the top of Ingleby Bank. After a short walk on a nice flat path the boss decided this was too easy and veered off across a trackless stretch of heather, down then and across a very full stream by elegant, inelegant and plain suicidal leaps, and up until we reached another path. Here we stopped for a drink before heading downhill towards Baysdale Abbey. As we were on a path things were too easy so we were treated to driving sleet and the claggiest yellow mud I've ever seen.

It was now I realised my second mistake, Tina and Barbara had shared our car, they had sensibly opted for Ian's flat walk and I had the keys in my pocket. After Baysdale Abbey it was up again and along the top back to Ingleby Bank, a very slippery descent and back to the car park where two very blue and wet passengers politely assured me they hadn't been waiting long! A quick change into dry clothes and finally to the pub for a well earned drink and lovely meal - the real reason we had all turned out. Thank you Ian for organising our Christmas outing once again, and Brian for leading such an interesting walk.
