Bowlees IIThe Alternative for those who could not read the programme/tell the time/get out of bed. Three members, Ann, Jane and Alan and not forgetting Dotty the dog (names may have been changed to protect the guilty) arrived in good time for a 10am start but too late for the actual start at 9am. Oops! Alan, a former boy scout (motto “Be Prepared”), produced a map and within a few minutes a route had been devised and the group set off in a north-westerly direction along the northern slopes of the valley. The chilly wind was tempered by the bright winter sun and the views all around were admired. A number of hares and rabbits attracted Dotty’s attention as she attempted to give chase. After passing Scar End and High Hurth Edge a number of old mine workings were spotted as the group descended to Langdon Beck. From there Harwood Beck was followed towards it confluence with the River Tees. A lunch stop was taken in a sheltered place by the babbling waters, basking in the warm mid-day sun. The Pennine Way was now followed down stream passing the magnificent High Force and the multiple tiers of Low Force where the bright winter sun played on the cascading water creating a wonderful scene as the number of photographers there would testify. Crossing the Wynch Bridge the group returned to the car park to end an enjoyable nine and a half miles. Late maybe but no stinting on the distance! A cuppa in the visitor centre completed a super day. Apologies to the leader of the official walk for not making the start and thanks to the girls and Dotty for their company. Anon |
