Alpujarra, Sierra Nevada, SpainFor a number of years I have fancied walking in this area of Spain. It is very mountainous with snowfields present until midsummer allowing downhill skiing and ski-mountaineering / cross country in very wild surroundings. We joined a two week Ramblers Holiday based in hotels in two different villages, Capileira and Portugos with a leader (no less than ex SOC member George Wright). We did day walks in wonderful country with an abundance of wild flowers and birdlife. Accommodation was excellent with good food and of course wine. Although not in the programme I (along with two others) took a day out to climb the highest mountain in mainland Spain, Mulhacen 3479m (11414 ft) and got down again in one piece! I would recommend this area to any other member interested in a good walking holiday. John Deighton |
