AllendaleThe group which met at Ian's, opted for the scenic drive to Allen Banks through Weardale and East Allendale to meet up with Yvonne and Ken. Unfortunately the trees were late into their autumn colours this year but the first couple of miles were still quite beautiful by the side of the river and the path less muddy than last year. 3 people plus dog opted for the very steep climb, rather than simply steep, to the top of Staward gorge at the ruined Pele Tower, and the view at the coffee stop was worth every effort. Down again to the river and by now it was so pleasantly warm that 3 people almost fell asleep in the sun at lunch time. This year we learned that what we had thought were Llamas were in fact Alpacas with their many varied colours and wonderful haircuts, especially the cute baby white one. A slight change in the route meant fewer stiles to climb over on the next farm section to bring us over the hill and down to Langley Dam. Soon after this the rain caught up with us and although never very heavy, stayed with us for most of the rest of the way. A stonefall at Raven Crag meant another climb up over the cliff and down again to cross the suspension bridge back to the car park. We had a lovely day's walk with mixed weather but very warm for October, and stunning views at times. Thanks again to those who took the trouble to drive the distance, and apologies if anyone turned up at the start after we'd gone. Yvonne Armitage |
