Westerdale Barn WeekendA strange idea sleeping in a converted barn in the middle of winter. However, since we both needed a break after the rigours of Christmas and New Year we decided to give it a try. I like the outdoors! There is always something new to do or see. One new experience I could gladly forego is opening the door of a barn which hasn't been heated for some time. The cold doesn't just snap but settles down for a leisurely chew on the marrow. So heaters on, and gradually the enemy retreated. By 9.00pm everyone had arrived (except Valerie who had sadly been taken ill) and John and Brian sat down to plan the next days walk. There is no doubt that Saturday's weather could have been better, rain snow and sleet was the order of the day, but the walk was well planned and the company good. That evening a fabulous meal was produced and I'd like to pass on everyone's thanks to Valerie for shopping for the main course even though she was unable to join us. After a sound nights sleep the weather on Sunday had changed again producing excellent weather for a walk over the moors in a circular loop from Westerdale and back. Would we go on a barn weekend again? Without a doubt! Good company, exercise and food in the bleakest time of year. If you haven't tried one we'd suggest you do. Finally, our thanks to John and Brian for organising the excellent walks and John in particular for the weekend's organisation. Dave and Linda |
