Skerne Valley ParkAfter a successful vote to the proposed motion that SOC affiliate to BOF/CLOK at the AGM on Monday 15 intrepid and curious runners turned up at Skerne Valley Park in the north of Darlington. It seemed there was some confusion amongst the locals about which park was Skerne, so I hope others didn't go to South Park and found no-one there. As fair beginners and with heavy heads from the Ceilidh the night before (most of you) you were set off with some help orientating your maps to attempt to collect 330 points in 45 minutes from 25 markers around the wet, soggy park. Others just came to chat and find out what it is all about, so I do hope to find you folks out another time. Some were in pairs, but the points ranged from full marks - 330, to 105 for the junior contingency, which was an excellent start. The winners were Nicola Drummond for the senior women and Paul Curry for the men. Paul managed to run it all in 25 minutes. Most people managed to return within the 45 minutes, so I only had to minus points off the Chairman as he took a gamble that didn't pay off. Just to prove I was also suffering a little and having never used my stopwatch for longer than 10 minutes before it confused me as after 30 minutes it slowed down and turned into minutes and seconds only, whereas it had been counting 100th of seconds to start with. It had to make room for the hour count. Paul came to my rescue on that one too! Thanks to those who ventured out and I hope to see you at some other events. Liz Copsey |
