Richmond Ride

This evening ride attracted six participants. It was dry but very dull in contrast to recent weather conditions! We climbed up Westfields, clattered through Whitcliffe Wood and cycled unchallenged along past the Applegarths (the bridleway issue is still not sorted out despite letters being written for 10 years!) A stiff climb halfway up Deepdale was followed by a steep descent down an overgrown track to west Applegarth and a scenic lane to Clapgate Bank. Here Rog had chain jamming problems taking a little time to sort out. We climbed Clapgate bank and cycled a mile on road before turning left and following the Beacon plantation track to Coalssgarth Gate. Behind the Jockey Cap the track was deeply rutted and in places impossible to ride.

Despite recent forestry operations the track down through Gilling Wood was quite good and a fast descent possible (quite thrilling!) Now farm tracks of varying quality and surfaces took us quickly to Gilling where we turned towards Richmond again. Because it was so dull and the light failing quickly we had to miss Skeeby and Easby and ride straight back to the Market Place and finish. 12 good miles. Thanks to riders who turned up.
