Hutton le HoleI was allowed out to lead another ride! I volunteered to step in when 2 leaders had been unable to ride after all. I turned up without having even looked at the intended route and hoped someone would know the area better than me. Last time I'd gone there, I sat in Dave's car for most of the ride feeling ill and sorry for myself! I thoroughly enjoyed this ride with 6 lads; 3 new members I'd not met and 3 others I'd met only once! The ride was sabotaged a few times and we had a fantastic day. After climbing out of Hutton-Le-Hole towards Rosedale Abbey I realised I was going the wrong way around the route. It was probably better this way, I was assured! Then Steve decided we should turn left along the old railway paths. It was easy going and great riding with good company. We passed by The Lion Inn and didn't even stop! I also learnt that if you see tadpoles in puddles, as we did, that it means we are in for a bad summer's weather! Oh no! Steve carried on as leader and went a completely different way than I'd expected, meaning we had to clamber down a horribly steep bank. I gave up trying to cycle after Rob had fallen off 5 times in a few metres. Rob (new lad) was the source of our entertainment most of the day; taking flying leaps and falls over most things most of us normal folk walk through! We had a lovely bacon butty in Rosedale Abbey after falling down off the railway paths. Then for the rest of the route, Grant took over as leader, and followed the reversed route Geoff had intended. It was an excellent path with varied terrain. Rob continued to fly over ditches, streams and got himself plastered in mud; then his bike workings began to complain about their treatment (can't say I blamed them!). I enjoyed the day and am looking forward to future rides with Rob, he's coming to Wales, so beware! Thanks must go to my 2 leaders that day, betweeen us we had devised an excellent route. Liz Copsey |
